All voice providers delivering calls to the US for termination will be affected by new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) directives telling providers to implement techniques to help block unwanted robocalls, according to Graham Francis, CEO of the SIP School.
He said “The FCC’s 2nd Report and Order instructs all US providers to implement STIR/SHAKEN and submit robocall mitigation plans to a centralised Database by June 2021.
“It also affects any provider around the world that uses US telephone numbers to send voice traffic to residential or business subscribers in the US. They must work with their US point of entry partner to register numbers used with the FCC and their partners should attest to their validity, calls may be blocked if this is not done.”
All voice service providers will have a duty in the US to not accept calls directly from service providers that have not submitted cetificates.
The issue may move closer to home still as OFCOM and the ICO published a joint plan to tackle nuisance calls in March following an 83% increase in complaints between October and December 2020.
